It’s coming at us from all angles. Is it just me or is so much online now just impossibly cool? Slick, sliding images. Cool curated content making you wish that you were there, experiencing, doing. I think I might be hyperventilating. This does not just apply to official websites but blogs, microblogs, instagram pages, it’s information overload. Lifestyle, food, travel, tech – we must all be living such glamorous lives, seriously. Does anyone actually still get mud on their shoe, trip over or miss the bus?
Take 2ManySiblings (Kenya stylista microbloggers – as featured in Vogue) and their fabulous Nairobi Thrift Social events – edgy music, clothes, artisans, aspirational lifestyle. Be there. Get seen and photographed too ideally. (A friend of mine went to one of their events and I was like seriously? How did you do that.?! I think that I might have died/after being thrown out for being too middle aged for starters).
Today I watched a vlog about a noodle bar in town by another achingly cool 20-something blogger Lyra Aoko. It looked amazing. Stylish, delicious, funky, cool. Then weirdly enough, 2 hours later I found myself standing right outside the place. OhCha in Westgate. And heck, I wanted to go in. Influencer marketing actually works (when done right). I wanted to buy in. I wanted noodles in cardboard boxes. I was salivating. In fact, the reality was that I was out voted and we went to the Tapas place opposite, which was more what we wanted, was delicious and fitted the bill – but throughout my Spanish meal, I have to admit I was peeping across the hallway at what I had missed.
So – imagine my surprise (and delight!) when I was asked to contribute to the impossibly trendy new Airbnb app for Nairobi. They’ve picked Nairobi as a location for Airbnb Trips featuring ‘Places’ and ‘Experiences’, so not only can you stay in a flat, rent an apartment or even stay a bus, or in the house that featured in The Constant Gardener movie but you can go out and be hosted by an ‘insider’ (Read: cool person who really knows their way around town) who will take you to visit a gallery, meet an artist, experience some local cuisine, craft jewellery, print fabric, climb, run, cycle, beat-box, comedy improv – you name it!
Well my contribution was a little more lowly. I wrote info on ‘family days out’ (which will be added in the next week or so) and is FAR less cool than features on Silicon Savanna, Nairobi Street Style or places to Brunch – but hey. Somebody has to get lumbered with the kids, so it may as well be me? Just as a note; Would rather be described as ‘freelance journalist/influencer‘ than ‘housewife and mum‘ but hey ho. #takingonefortheteam
Download the free Airbnb app on your smartphone today, select destination ‘Nairobi’ and prepare to be amazed. Honestly, this the city that you never even realised you lived in?!
